ATU Local 1573 Members Win Pay Increases and Other Improvements
Brampton, ON – After months of contract talks and a strike threat, the more than 1,400 Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1573–Brampton, ON, members working for Brampton Transit voted to ratify the tentative agreement reached in negotiations. Over three quarters of the members voted in favour of the contract.
The Union gains were the result of steadfast solidarity, the power of collective bargaining, and a determined negotiating team that stood firm on delivering a fair and respectful agreement for frontline transit professionals who keep the City of Brampton moving.
“This is a victory built on unity and resilience,” said ATU International Vice President Ken Wilson. “Our members stood strong through the tough negotiations, and their solidarity sent a clear message: we will not settle for less than we deserve. This contract reflects our members’ unwavering commitment to improving conditions for themselves and future transit workers.”
The new contract includes improvements to wages, benefits, and working conditions—bringing Local 1573 members in line with comparable transit systems across the Greater Toronto Area. The deal was reached only weeks after Union members threatened to strike after overwhelmingly rejecting a previous contract offer from Brampton Transit that had significantly reduced wages from their previous offer, while also adding new concessions
ATU International President John Costa applauded the members and the Local for their tenacity. “This win didn’t come easy, and it didn’t come fast—but it came because Local 1573 never gave up. It’s not only a win for our members, but for our riders to ensure the safe and reliable transportation they depend on each day,” said Costa. “This victory is the result of months of hard work and the unity of our Brampton members. They demanded better —and they got it. I’m proud of the strength they showed every step of the way.”
The ratification ends a period of uncertainty and reaffirms the essential role Brampton Transit workers play in
keeping the community moving.
