San Rafael, CA – Just days from a potential strike that would have disrupted transportation from Santa Rosa to San Francisco, members of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1575 have ratified a strong contract, reached with Golden Gate Transit management after eight intense months of negotiations over the key issues of wages and pension.
“This contract is not the end of our struggle. Bus operators are sick and tired of being called essential workers during the worst of the pandemic, to then be considered disposable when we ask for a raise,” said Local President Shane Weinstein. “While management hid in their offices, bus operators have been on the front lines of this pandemic for the past two years, helping essential workers get to their jobs and getting community members where they need to go.”
Last month, after seven months of stalled contract talks with the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, the Local’s members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike if necessary, as the transit agency continued to use the pandemic as an excuse to force unsatisfactory concessions on its employees.
“While our members ratified this contract, they were ready to walk off the job,” continued Weinstein. “In January, they showed their resolve by voting by 99% to authorize a strike. Management needs to start listening to these workers because our union will keep fighting back each time they disrespect us. We hope this contract will be the beginning of a more respectful approach from management.”
“Our members at Local 1575 showed their strength and solidarity to Golden Gate Transit through their strike vote and won a strong contract. This is a victory for living wages, fair treatment on the job, and for our riders,” said ATU International President John Costa. “I am proud of these workers for standing strong and standing together. Their unity showed the power of collective action, and as their struggle continues beyond this contract for dignity and respect from Golden Gate Transit, we will be with them every step of the way.”
