Silver Spring, MD – The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International President John Costa released the following statement after multiple mass shootings devastate the country.
“Our Union is shocked by the brazen acts of violence that took place across the country this past weekend with multiple mass shootings. From Buffalo to California and Houston, communities and families have been shattered. Unfortunately, the ATU knows all too well about this type of violence after losing our Local 265-San Jose, CA, members to a mass shooting at a railyard a year ago.
“While investigations are ongoing, we know that in Buffalo, a white supremacist killed ten people, and wounded three, terrorizing millions of Black people across our country. The hate that manifested itself is not new. It has been fueled by centuries of structural and systemic racism and perpetuated by a wave of online radicalism.
“From grocery stores to places of worship to schools and on public transit, it feels like nowhere is safe. Enough is enough. We must act now before more lives are lost.
“The ATU will always stand with the victims and against racism and hate in all its forms. Our condolences are with the families, friends, and community members that are left behind.”
