Silver Spring, MD – ATU International President John A. Costa released the following statement in response to the “Moving Forward Framework” released by House Democrats:
“With exploding urban populations, worsening traffic jams, young people forgoing cars, stressed public transit systems and crumbling bridges, roads, rail lines, and ports, our country needs a plan to fix and invest in our transportation systems and infrastructure to meet the demands of the 21st century economy.
“As the transit workers who operate and maintain our public transit systems, we salute House Transportation Chairman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) for his leadership in putting forth a bold plan to invest $760 billion to rebuild our nation’s ailing transportation systems and infrastructure. The proposal recognizes that climate change is real, and that public transit can play a huge role in helping us save the planet.
“We look forward to working with the House Transportation Committee and other Committees of jurisdiction to come up with a way to pay for it. We need our country and Congress to start thinking big when it comes to fixing our transportation systems and infrastructure, which are critical to our economy, jobs, communities and providing opportunities for all. The ‘Moving Forward Framework’ is a smart and bold step in that direction.”
