An Educated Member is a Powerful Member

A strong labor movement doesn’t happen by chance. It’s built by informed, engaged members. When workers are educated, they do more than belong to a union. They become active participants in a collective force capable of driving real change. In the labor movement, education isn’t optional. It’s the engine that powers us.

Your Rights Are Your Power

First and foremost, education gives workers the tools they need to defend themselves. When members understand labor laws, contracts, and workplace rights, they’re far less vulnerable to exploitation. Instead of relying on others to speak for them, they can challenge unfair treatment directly and confidently. This shift from dependence to empowerment transforms a union into a powerful, democratic organization where every voice matters.

Leaders Come from the Membership

Additionally, education builds a deeper and more resilient leadership base. A union can’t thrive if knowledge and decision-making are limited to a small group. Training programs that develop communication, organizing, and bargaining skills create leaders at every level. When more members are prepared to step up, unions become stronger, more adaptable, and better equipped to respond to challenges. Simply put, a well-educated membership multiplies a union’s strength.

Unity Starts with Understanding

Equally important, education strengthens solidarity, the backbone of any labor movement. When workers understand the history behind their rights and the sacrifices that secured them, they develop a shared sense of purpose. A divided workforce struggles. An informed and united one wins. That solidarity drives engagement, too. An informed membership doesn’t sit on the sidelines. They show up, speak out, and fight for progress.

I have seen this firsthand at the ATU. From attending Shop Stewards training to Arbitration training to Executive Board Member training, New Officer training, and others, our members leave energized, empowered, unified, and prepared for the challenges facing our Union.

Starts with You

In the end, the message is clear: if the labor movement is to grow and succeed, it must invest in educating its members. Knowledge creates power, and that power belongs to every worker. That starts with you. Learn your rights. Participate in union trainings. Encourage your fellow members to stay informed. Attend meetings, ask questions, and take on leadership roles whenever possible. A stronger labor movement begins with educated members, and it grows when each of us steps forward and becomes part of that strength.
