ATU by the Numbers. Our Union is Reaching New Heights

Membership

ATU has been crunching the numbers in order to give our members a statistical overview of our union. The numbers show that despite a period of overall decline in Union membership, the ATU continues to show steady growth.

Ridership

While COVID saw a decline in ridership numbers, the ATU played a key role in the infrastructure bill to get funding for public transit. Ridership rebounded significantly because of our efforts.

Organizing

Our organizing victories are a testament to the tireless efforts of our Local unions and our International Union. The ATU is growing as more and more transit workers recognize the importance of having a strong voice in the workplace.

Collective Bargaining

Over the last three years, our Union has had unprecedented success in negotiating strong contracts for our members. We have seen record wage increases, numerous first contracts, and improved benefits. These victories at the bargaining table can be attributed to our Locals and members waging aggressive campaigns with assistance from the International.

ATU Wages

Here are the highest wage increases secured by our Locals for each job classification.

Education and Training

ATU training programs teach members how to fight for dignity and justice on the job and in our communities by educating members about their rights at work and how to resist employer attacks on wages, benefits, and working conditions. Training ATU leaders is necessary to build a strong and powerful union and labor movement.

ATU COPE

As the largest transit worker Political Action Committee (PAC) in the United States, ATU-COPE is the voice of transit workers, school bus employees and over-the-road bus workers at all levels of government. Since by law, union dues cannot be used to fund political campaigns, voluntary member contributions to ATU-COPE are used to help elect pro-labor, pro-transit candidates for local, state and federal office and then hold them accountable once they are elected.

Contributing to ATU-COPE is Easy

ATU-COPE contributions have risen over the past three years, but many lawmakers continue to push back on investing in public transit, unions and the rights of working families.  ATU U.S. members should contribute to ATU-COPE to open doors for ATU members on Capitol Hill and in state legislatures and local governments across the U.S. If your Local has a checkoff provision in its contract, contact your Local for a Checkoff Authorization Card to voluntarily authorize your employer to deduct an amount you specify from your pay each month for ATU-COPE. You can also click the QR code to easily contribute to ATU-COPE.

Authorized by the Amalgamated Transit Union on behalf of a fund-raising effort for the Amalgamated Transit Union Committee on Political Education (ATU-COPE). Contributions or gifts to Amalgamated Transit Union COPE are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.
