International President Costa Presents Donation to Family of Our Fallen Local 1572-Mississauga, ON, Brother Killed in Tragic Workplace Accident

At 4 a.m. on Saturday, September 17th, while delegates were at the ATU 60th International Convention in Las Vegas, NV, tragedy struck in Mississauga, ON, when our Local 1572 Brother David Dongbo ZHU was killed in a workplace accident at a maintenance facility while performing maintenance on a bus. After being taken to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind his family, friends and colleagues.

Outpouring of Support

When Local 1572 President/Business Agent Jack Jackson spread the tragic news across the ATU Convention that our Brother ZHU was killed, it led to an emotional and spontaneous moment with delegates, Locals, ATU Conference Boards, ATU Caucuses, and International officers making donations which the ATU International matched.

After all the pledged donations were collected following the Convention, International President John Costa traveled to Mississauga, ON, for a somber meeting at Local 1572 with the family of Brother ZHU to present his wife and sister Ruby with a donation to help their family during this very tragic loss. International Vice Presidents Manny Sforza and Ken Wilson, along with ATU Canada President John Di Nino, joined Costa.

Some Peace

“We are very sorry for the loss of your husband and our Brother David in this very tragic accident at work,” Costa told ZHU’s wife and his sister as he presented the check. “We hope this donation from our Union and his ATU brothers and sisters gives you, his children, and your entire family some peace.”

Thank you to all our ATU members and leaders for stepping up when we needed you the most.
