This week, ATU is proudly hosting a dynamic Stewards Training in Ontario, Canada, alongside our committed union siblings from Local 113-Toronto, ON.
ATU International President John Costa shared powerful words with attendees. “Our union is only as strong as our most active members,” said Costa. “Stewards are the heart of the ATU – the frontline leaders who ensure our union remains connected, responsive, and resilient. When we invest in training our stewards, we’re not just developing individual skills – we’re building stronger locals, empowering entire communities, and laying the foundation for lasting solidarity. I’ve been in your shoes. I started out as a Shop Steward. I know firsthand that it’s not easy work. It takes dedication, patience, and a deep commitment to your fellow members. But it’s worth it – because what you do makes a real difference in people’s lives. You are the bridge between members and leadership, the voice that brings concerns to the table, and the strength that keeps our union moving forward.”

Union stewards are the frontline defenders of worker rights, and through education and solidarity, we are building a stronger, more united movement. From grievance handling to mobilizing members, these stewards will be better equipped to lead the fight for fairness and dignity on the job.
Thank you to all who participated and continue to carry the torch for transit workers across Ontario and beyond. The future of our union is in great hands!
