ATU Stands in Solidarity with Striking British RMT Transit Workers

Silver Spring, MD – Amalgamated Transit Union International President John Costa issued the following statement in strong support for the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) workers on strike at British Rail and the London Underground.

“As the largest transit union in North America, I want to express the strong support of our more than 200,000 ATU members with the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) members on strike in Great Britain.

“This attack on transit workers is happening across the world. These workers, like our members, were hailed by politicians and transit chiefs as frontline heroes for working throughout the pandemic to keep their communities moving. Now those same bosses and elected officials want to slash jobs, freeze pay, cut healthcare and pensions, and refuse to improve working conditions. These workers have worked hard for their entire lives. It’s robbery.

“As fellow transit workers, we recognize the need to fight these tactics, and together we will not back down. This strike by RMT members sends a loud and clear message to management and governments, not only in Great Britain but across the world, that working people will not stand silent. Our Union stands in solidarity with RMT transit workers in their struggle, because at the ATU, Together We Fight, Together We Win!”
