ATU Saddened by Fatal LGBTQIA+ Shooting in Colorado Springs, CO

Silver Spring, MD – Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International President John Costa released the following statement after the mass shooting at a LGBTQIA+ establishment in Colorado Springs, CO.

“The Amalgamated Transit Union is shocked and saddened by the horrific shooting at a Colorado Springs LGBTQIA+ establishment that took the lives of 5 people and injured dozens. It is especially tragic that this senseless act of violence took place on the eve of Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to remember those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia.

“Our hearts and condolences go out to the victims, their families, and friends, along with our praise for those who brought a halt to the savage attack, saving lives, and treating the injured with their quick action.

“The LGBTQIA+ community has been the target of hate and violence in recent years. At the ATU, we remain committed to fighting against violence and discrimination against all people regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or any difference.

“The ATU knows all too well about gun violence after losing our Local 265-San Jose, CA, members to a mass shooting at a railyard in May 2021.

“Yet another community in America has been torn apart by gun violence. We must come together as a nation to take serious action to ensure that these horrific acts of violence and hate never happen again.”
