Silver Spring, MD – John A. Costa, International President of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) released the following statement in reaction to the death of Harold “Sonny” Hall, Transport Workers Union (TWU) International President Emeritus.

“On behalf of the more than 200,000 ATU members and the ATU General Executive Board, we express our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family, friends, and our brothers and sisters at TWU on the passing of Harold “Sonny” Hall.

“Sonny was a true labor leader and steadfast champion of working people and their families. He started his career, as did I, as a Cleaner and worked his way up the ranks to become President of TWU Local 100 in New York City and then TWU International President in 1993, a position he held until his retirement in 2004. Sonny also served as President of the AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department, where he helped unite transportation unions into a political force.

“Sonny’s death is a real loss for the labor movement. He will be remembered for his dedication, commitment and tireless effort to improve the lives of transportation workers and their families.”
