Transit Union Mourns the Passing of Congressman Jim Oberstar

Washington, DC - Larry Hanley, international president of the Amalgamated Transit Union, issued the following statement on the passing of former Congressman Jim Oberstar, D-MN:

“We were saddened to hear of the passing of Congressman Jim Oberstar.  Oberstar was a true friend of transit workers and working families across America.

"Throughout his 36 years in public service Jim Oberstar was a champion for public transportation and strong advocate for transportation workers. A tireless proponent for federal investment in transportation, he understood the important role transportation and public transit played in moving people, our communities, and our economy.

"Jim Oberstar put people before politics, working to create jobs for hard working Americans and to build a strong economy for future generations. He believed all Americans deserved an equal opportunity and a better quality of life. Oberstar recognized the important role unions played in providing workers a strong voice in the workplace.

"Even after he left Congress Jim Oberstar volunteered his time to help transit workers. It’s impossible to overestimate how much good he did to help all working people.

"We will remember him as a fighter for workers’ rights and for transit mobility for all Americans. We are grateful for all that he’s done.

"We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed by all.”
