ATU CAN-AM Conference Convenes in Niagara Falls, ON

In July, more than 190 Local leaders from across North America gathered in Niagara Falls, ON, for the 2022 ATU CAN-AM Conference, the first meeting of the CAN-AM since the COVID-19 pandemic. 

 

Your Commitment to the ATU

International President John Costa joined ATU CAN-AM President Danny Casella, Local 726-Staten Island, NY, to kick off the conference by recalling the founding of the ATU CAN-AM, acknowledging one of its founders, former Local 113-Toronto, ON, Financial Secretary-Treasurer Les Moore. 

Costa thanked the Local officers in attendance for their leadership. “Thank you for your sacrifice and dedication over the past few very difficult years to keep our Union strong. Thank you for your commitment to representing our members to protect them and their jobs. Without you, this Union would not be where we are today.” 

He also spoke about our recent successful strikes, contract wins for our Locals, innovative apprenticeship programs, the upcoming International Convention, International trainings for our members, including the Women’s Equity Training, and other work of our Union.

 

Officer Elections 

Elections were also held for all current officers and board members. The winners were President Danny Cassella, Local 726-Staten Island, NY; Vice President Scott Gordon Local 113-Toronto, ON; Financial Secretary Max Matharu Local 113-Toronto, ON; Recording Secretary Patrick Hogan Boston Carmen’s Union Local 589; Executive Board Members Eric Tuck Local 107-Hamilton, ON; Dwight Mattingly Local 1577-West Palm Beach, FL; Clint Crabtree Local 279-Ottawa, ON; Thomas Mason Local 726-Staten Island, NY; Dragan Markovic Local 616-Windsor, ON; and Chairman of the New Jersey State Council Orlando Riley. 

Member of Parliament Matthew Green, a friend of the ATU and working families, addressed the Conference to rousing applause. Attendees also heard important presentations from experts and ATU staff on mental health in the workplace, apprenticeships, political action, elections, and other topics. 

Also attending the CAN-AM conference were International Secretary-Treasurer Ken Kirk along with International Vice Presidents Yvette Trujillo, Manny Sforza, Natalie Cruz, Ray Greaves, Steve MacDougall, Ken Wilson, Amanda Sawyer-Malone, and ATU Canada President John Di Nino.
