ATU Sets the Bar with Historic Training Turnout

More than 325 Local leaders logged on for two of the largest Zoom trainings in ATU history as International President John Costa convened record-setting Executive Board Trainings focused on their core responsibilities. The turnout sent a clear message that ATU leaders are serious about strengthening their Locals and delivering for our members.

International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo and International Secretary-Treasurer Ken Kirk joined Costa in addressing participants, reinforcing the shared responsibility of leadership and the importance of preparation at every level of the organization.

Preparing Leaders for the Weight of the Job

“It’s inspiring to see so many of you join us for this important training,” Costa told attendees. “As Executive Board members, you play an essential role for your Local and our members. You must organize, strategize, and think outside the box.”

Costa spoke candidly about the demands of Executive Board service, drawing on his own experience. “I’ve been in your shoes and wish I had this training when I served on an Executive Board,” he said. “This is a serious responsibility. It takes knowledge, skill, and real dedication to do the job right.”

Breaking Down the Essentials

The training delivered practical, nuts-and-bolts guidance on Executive Board service, including officers’ roles and obligations, as well as the responsibilities outlined in the ATU Constitution and General Laws. Participants also received in-depth instruction on the administrative side of the job, with a focus on Local oversight, fiduciary responsibility, and accountability to the membership.

Investing in Stronger Locals

Executive Board members are critical to the effective operation and integrity of ATU Locals. By hosting these record-setting trainings, the ATU continues to invest in leadership education and long-term organizational strength. Under Costa’s leadership, our Union remains committed to equipping Local leaders with the tools they need to meet challenges head-on and to represent members with confidence, transparency, and purpose.
