Empowering Union Leaders: ATU’s Shop Steward Training Strengthens Our Movement Across North America
Recently, ATU’s Shop Steward Training Program took center stage across North America, empowering hundreds of our members from diverse regions with the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for their fellow workers. From Pennsylvania to Louisiana, Ontario, and New Jersey, the training emphasized the essential role that Shop Stewards play in building stronger unions, defending workers’ rights, and ensuring fair treatment in the workplace.
Led by ATU staff, the program offered interactive, hands-on learning to better equip Shop Stewards in their vital leadership roles. The essential training covered advocacy, legal rights, bargaining tactics, grievance procedures, and the responsibilities of being a Shop Steward.
Pennsylvania: Strengthening Local Leadership
In Harrisburg, PA, over 60 Shop Stewards gathered for this enhanced training program. International President John Costa, who kicked off the session via Zoom, highlighted the importance of Shop Stewards in defending workers. “Our Union is taking a stand against low wages, poor benefits, and disrespect on the job. As Shop Stewards, you play a crucial role in supporting your Local and our members,” Costa told the energized group. “This training is designed to prepare you for those battles.”
The program also featured International Vice Presidents Gary Johnson, Ray Greaves, and Jacques Chapman, who shared insights on union leadership and organizing.
Louisiana: Empowering the South
Following the ATU General Executive Board meeting in New Orleans, over 70 Shop Stewards from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas gathered for the intensive two-day training session. Costa’s words resonated deeply with the participants: “I’m proud we’re here to give you this critical training. I was a Shop Steward just like you. Shop Stewards are on the frontlines, fighting the good fight for our members,” Costa told the attendees. “I’m honored to be here with you and honored to represent this Union with you. It feels good to fight back, right? Knowledge is power, and this training will give you critical knowledge. It’s an investment in the future of the labor movement. So, learn as much as you can, and keep up the amazing work you’re doing.”
Joining Costa at the training were International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo, International Vice Presidents Gary Johnson, Anthony Garland, Curtis Howard, Amanda Sawyer-Turner, and Ken Day, who work with Locals across the South.
Ontario: Uniting Workers in Canada
In Ontario, Canada, ATU held another successful Shop Steward training with Local 113, bringing together dedicated members to strengthen the foundation of leadership within the Local.
“Stewards are the heart of the ATU – the frontline leaders who ensure our Union remains connected, responsive, and resilient. When we invest in training our Shop Stewards, we’re not just developing individual skills – we’re building stronger Locals, empowering entire communities, and laying the foundation for lasting solidarity. I’ve been in your shoes. I know firsthand that it’s not easy work. It takes dedication, patience, and a deep commitment to your fellow members. But it’s worth it – because what you do makes a real difference in people’s lives. You are the bridge between members and leadership, the voice that brings concerns to the table, and the strength that keeps our Union moving forward.”
International Vice President Manny Sforza joined Costa at the training along with ATU Canada President John Di Nino, who facilitated.
Historic Training in Atlantic City, NJ
Nearly 200 Shop Stewards from across New Jersey, New York, and Delaware came together in Atlantic City, NJ, in May for a powerful Shop Steward Training, making it our largest training in history to date. IP Costa was on the ground, connecting directly with Stewards, answering questions, and offering insights drawn from decades of experience. “Watching almost 200 Shop Stewards come together with such focus, fire, and solidarity reminds me why I believe so deeply in this Union,” said Costa. “Coming from Jersey, this is my roots. I can see myself sitting here as a Steward. This training wasn’t just about learning contract language or filing grievances. It was about building confidence, building community, and building power.
Our Stewards are going home ready to lead, ready to fight, and ready to win. Thank you for everything you do for this mighty Union.” Led by experienced ATU International staff, the training went beyond theory—it was hands-on, practical, and laser-focused on results to equip Stewards with the tools and knowledge necessary to lead the fight for our members. IEVP Trujillo and International Vice Presidents Ray Greaves, Jacques Chapman, and Mark Henry also joined the training, adding their experience and expertise.
