After more than 32 years as a dedicated and committed member of the ATU, International Vice President Curtis Howard has announced he will conclude his service to the ATU effective August 31, 2026.
“Curtis Howard has spent more than three decades fighting for transit workers, starting on the shop floor at MARTA and rising to lead Local 732-Atlanta, GA, as President/Business Agent before joining our International staff. When Curtis started as an electrical power technician at MARTA in 1994, he probably didn’t picture himself representing our members across the entire Southern United States,” said ATU International President John Costa. “Curtis never lost his shop steward instinct. He built a career on real wins for his Local and our members. He also ensured retirees had a home in the Local by launching Local 732’s first Retiree Chapter. Curtis, thank you for everything you’ve given to this Union.”
Howard first joined Local 732-Atlanta, GA, as a MARTA electrical power technician in 1994. Wanting to get more involved with the Local, he became a shop steward for the MARTA electrical department fighting to improve working conditions and the rights of his fellow workers.
In 1999, Howard was elected to the Local 732 Executive Board and in 2004 was elected Vice President for Maintenance and non-MARTA properties. After serving three terms as a Vice President, Howard was elected President/Business Agent serving two terms.
Howard was named an International Representative in January 2017 by the late International President Larry Hanley and then appointed International Vice President in 2018. He has been re-elected IVP at every ATU International Convention since his appointment.
