At today's DNC Labor Committee panel, International President John Costa, a DNC Super Delegate, stood with Local 1091 President/Business Agent Brent Payne to talk about Austin, where more than 75 percent of CapMetro transit workers can't afford to live in the city they serve. Their answer? Organize, vote to authorize a strike, and stay unified until the company came to the table.
"Working people are watching who shows up for them and who doesn't. This is the moment to show up,” said Costa. “Here's what we're asking of this committee heading into the midterms. Support candidates who support working people. Not candidates who say the right words about labor in a union hall and then vote the other way. Build a platform that puts workers at the center, not as a line item, but as the actual frame.”
After the panel, IP Costa and Payne visited our Local 1091 members at the North Op and 2910 CapMetro yards to personally thank them for standing strong and united in their contract fight. Costa was also able to speak at an operator safety meeting.
As Costa says, “you can’t run a union from your office.” The ATU will continue to ensure our members are seen and our voices are heard!
