We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of retired International Vice President Bob Hykaway.
Hykaway started as a mechanic for the City of Winnipeg Transit in 1974 when he joined Local 1505-Winnipeg, MB. After serving as a shop steward for the Local, he was elected Local Vice President in 1987. Hykaway became Acting President/Business Agent in 1993 and was elected President/Business Agent in 1994.
Hykaway served as a Western Executive Board member of the former Canadian Council, now ATU Canada, participated on the Joint Labour/Management Task Force for Transit Competitiveness, and was a trustee of the City of Winnipeg Employee Benefits Board Pension Plan.
In September 1997, International President Jim La Sala appointed Bob an International Vice President, and he was elected to that position at each convention until his retirement in 2017.
“Bob Hykaway was proud to be a member of the ATU. He always had a smile on his face and made people laugh. Bob served our Union for many years with commitment and dedication, fighting for the rights and dignity of our members across Canada,” said International President John Costa. “We send our deepest condolences to Bob’s wife, Betty, his two daughters, Tammy and Tracey, and numerous grandchildren. Rest in Power, Bob!”
