This week marks a significant moment for transit workers in the Western states as ATU International President John Costa joined Locals in Spokane, Washington, from the Northwest Conference Board and the California Conference Board, who came together for the ATU Western States conference. This important gathering brought together frontline transit workers and union leaders to discuss critical issues facing the industry and strategize for a stronger future.
Costa spoke passionately about the power of unity, stating: "When transit workers from every corner of the Western states and provinces come together, we amplify our voice and push for the respect, safety, and fair treatment every worker deserves. You’re the backbone of public transportation and vital to the daily lives of millions. This meeting is a testament to the ATU’s commitment to building a regional network of empowered workers who can stand together to meet the challenges of today’s transit industry. Whether it’s fighting for safer working conditions, expanding access to quality public transit, or ensuring fair contracts, our members know that standing united is the only way forward.” Costa also gave an impressive rundown of all the amazing work being done in the West, congratulating our members for the fights we’ve waged together in the pursuit of justice.

From Phoenix to Seattle, from San Francisco to Los Angeles, our members united to share experiences, exchange best practices, and build solidarity across state lines. The convening focused on key topics such as improving workplace safety, advancing fair wages and benefits, protecting public transit funding, and advocating for policies that support both transit workers and the communities we serve.
Joining Costa were International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo, Secretary Treasurer Ken Kirk, and IVPs Jim Lindsay, John Callahan, Art Aguliar, and Michael Cornellius.
Stay tuned for more updates as we carry this momentum forward and continue to build power from the West Coast to the Pacific Northwest!
