ATU Celebrates Black History Month 2026

Karen Miller — Local 1700- Greyhound

When Karen Miller started working at Greyhound more than 35 years ago, she was told as a woman of color that she would never be able to drive a bus. Miller ignored that and became a Greyhound Bus Driver, joining ATU Local 1700. Wanting to get more involved, Miller served as a Shop Steward to advocate for her members. She was also a Driver Instructor. Miller was elected as the Local’s first-ever female Vice President/Assistant Business Agent where she served for two terms. Recognizing her leadership skills, members elected Miller as the Local’s first-ever female President/Business Agent in 2016 and is serving her fourth term. Under her presidency, Miller steered the Local through the difficult days of the pandemic and has helped secure strong contracts. We thank Karen Miller for her unwavering dedication to Local 1700!

Lorence Bradford — Local 1756-Arcadia, CA

Lorence Bradford understood early on that union membership is acommitment to solidarity, advocacy, and service. After beginning hiscareer as a school bus driver, Bradford became a transit operator in2004 and a proud member of Local 1756 in Arcadia, CA. Recognizingthe vital role of a strong union, Bradford became a Shop Steward.Then in 2009, he was elected to the Executive Board. Bradford expandedhis role at the Local when he was elected as Vice President in 2012.Through years of steadfast service, Bradford earned the respect andconfidence of the membership and was elected as Local President/Business Agent in 2020. Bradford has emphasized open bargainingand prioritized transparency to ensure members are actively involvedin the negotiations. His leadership reflects a deep belief that aninformed and engaged membership is the foundation of a strongand united union!

Tanya Daye — Local 113-Toronto, ON

Tanya Daye was a Licensed Automotive Technician when shejoined Local 113 in March 2017. Initially a Coach TechnicianApprentice, she rose to become a Licensed Coach Technician,ensuring the safety of Toronto’s transit system. Dedicated tomentorship, Tanya collaborates with the Toronto District andCatholic School Boards through "Job Talks" to inspire girls ingrades to explore the trades. After attending the 2025 ATUInternational Women’s Conference in New Orleans, LA, Tanyastepped into a pivotal leadership role at Local 113’s Women’sCommittee, the International Women’s Civil Rights Committee,the Trades Committee, and the Local 113 Black Caucus Chapter,while also serving as Treasurer for the Local’s Pride Committee.Currently, Tanya is working with the Trades Committee onvital Job Market Research, which is instrumental in preparingfor the Local’s upcoming contract negotiations. We applaudTanya for her commitment to her Local, our Union,and her community.

Keith Hill — Local 241 – Chicago, IL

Since birth, Keith Hill has had the ATU in his blood, as his late mother Debra Hill was a bus operator and clerk for more than 29 years at the Chicago Transit Authority and more than 35 years as a Local 241-Chicago, IL, member. Keith began his journey in transit as a CTA bus operator in 1998. He took a leadership role in 2001 as an Executive Board Member at the Chicago Ave. Garage. In 2011, he was elected as the Local’s 2nd Vice President. In 2017, members recognized his strength as a leader electing Keith as President/Business Agent. As a respected voice with the Mayor of Chicago, the Illinois Governor, Members of Congress, and the CTA leadership, he has fought to protect members’ jobs, improve benefits, and ensure every member’s voice is heard. Among many accomplishments, Keith played a leadership role in the Illinois Legislature passage of the landmark $1.5 Billion Transit Funding bill that halted layoffs, stopped service cuts, and improved safety.  Thank you, Keith, for your dedicated leadership, service, and activism.
