International President John Costa names Salma Yousefi ATU Controller

Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International President John Costa has named Salma Yousefi, current ATU Deputy Controller, as ATU’s Controller.

“We welcome and congratulate Salma on her new role as ATU’s Controller,” said Costa. “Salma has a wealth of financial experience, has helped guide our union’s strategic financial decisions, and has been integral to the financial health of our union. With her extensive qualifications, I look forward to continuing to work with her and have the utmost confidence in her abilities.”

Salma was hired as ATU Assistant Controller in January 2017 to help record the finances of the Tommy Douglas Conference Center. She was then promoted in July 2017 to ATU Deputy Controller to manage the financial operations of the Tommy Douglas Conference Center and the ATU. Her job duties include monitoring and recording all the financial operations of ATU, supervising and managing all the membership changes for over 200 locals, and acting as the pension fund administrator.

Salma graduated from the University of Maryland in December of 2008 with an accounting degree and became a CPA in 2012.

After graduating, Salma began her career at the Machinists Union in January 2009, where she worked for eight years until January 2017. Salma chose to work for a union after becoming interested and active in the labor movement in college due to the inclusivity of unions and the disdain she felt toward toxic corporate environments. Salma is a mom of two children under the age of three. Darius is two and a half, and Dina is six months old.

“I want to thank International President John Costa for this amazing opportunity to continue to serve the ATU membership in this capacity,” said Yousefi. “The ATU is like a family, and I’m truly honored to be a part of this union. I look forward to continuing to work with the Locals and the International to ensure all of our organizations are fiscally responsible.”
