ATU: Time for a COVID relief bill, not a new Supreme Court Justice

Silver Spring, MD – ATU International President John Costa released the following statement on  Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court:

“As transit systems suffer, working families struggle, and the pandemic rages on, the White House and GOP-led Senate can find time to ram through a Supreme Court justice nominee, but refuse to work with Democrats in Congress to pass a much-needed COVID-19 relief bill.

“Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s track record shows she is no friend of the labor movement. If Judge Barrett is confirmed, it would be an unmitigated disaster for workers’ rights, civil rights, and our country.

“With all that’s at stake with this appointment, this nomination should not be rushed through. After all, it was Senator Mitch McConnell who in 2016 said a Supreme Court nominee should not be decided during an election year. Let the American people vote, and the winner of the upcoming presidential election decide who should fill this Supreme Court vacancy.”
