ATU Renews the Fight for Worker Rights on Canada Day

Silver Spring, MD, USA - Amalgamated Transit Union International President Larry Hanley released the following statement to mark Canada Day.

“Today, on behalf of all the members of the Amalgamated Transit Union we celebrate Canada Day.

“Our brothers and sisters have made ATU Canada into a formidable voice for our members, public transit and working families across Canada.

“They have fought to Keep Transit Public in Ontario, rallied against driver assaults in Winnipeg, pushed for safer buses on Parliament Hill, and so much more.

“As we celebrate this day we remember great Canadians like Tommy Douglas, a champion of working Canadians who fought for justice, freedom, and equality for all. His commitment and hard work helped establish progressive labour laws, universal health care and other rights to help make Canada the great and proud nation it is today.

“However the forces of corporate greed and privatization and their politician stooges like Doug Ford threaten to destroy what the Canadian labour movement has fought hard for.

“But rest assured that ATU will renew our commitment and resolve like never before to fight for the rights and freedoms that have allowed our members and all Canadians the opportunity to pursue a better life.

“Today, we say happy Canada Day and celebrate a nation that is ‘True North strong and free’.”
