ATU Honors Those Who Serve

Silver Spring, MD – Amalgamated Transit Union International President John A. Costa issued the following statement to mark Veterans Day in the U.S. and Remembrance Day in Canada:

Today we honor the men and women who have served in the armed forces of the United States and Canada as we celebrate Veterans and Remembrance Day.

“We remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as those who will bear the physical and psychological wounds of war for the rest of their lives. We owe them a debt of gratitude greater than we can ever pay back.

“We especially salute our recently deceased International Secretary-Treasurer Oscar Owens and the many ATU members who have served in our armed forces. Their service, and the service of all veterans have made it possible for union members to collectively bargain for a better life.

“Unfortunately too many veterans struggle with everyday life after serving their country.  We must ensure they have jobs, timely health care, psychological counseling, and many other services that they desperately need all year long, not just speeches and songs on this special day.

“As we mark Veterans and Remembrance Day, please take a moment to honor those who have answered the call to serve and risked all to pass onto the next generation the liberty and the freedoms that define our democracies.”
