ATU honors those who ‘made the ultimate sacrifice’ for America

Amalgamated Transit Union International President Larry Hanley released the following statement to mark Memorial Day.

“This Memorial Day, the Amalgamated Transit Union honors the memory of the servicemembers, including many within our ATU family, who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to those who will be decorating the graves of friends and family who died in service.

“For most Americans, Memorial Day is just another long weekend. But as you gather with family and friends at the beach, backyard barbeques, picnics, and other events, take a few moments to acknowledge those who gave their lives in hopes that it would ensure a better life for all of us. And take a moment to remember that we as a nation still have a long way to go to live up to their sacrifices.

“A recent report found that pay for CEOs rose to 361 times that of the average American worker, increasing the already wide income inequality gap between the elite and the rest of us. That is not the America that our fallen heroes gave their lives for.

“We must work to create a country where all workers are paid living wages, have affordable healthcare, can get a good education, and enjoy a decent retirement; a country that lives up to its own ideals of equal justice and opportunity for all. a country that is committed to improving the lives of its own citizens rather than sacrificing its future leaders by waging endless war abroad.”
