ATU: Happy Thanksgiving Canada and Pay it Forward

HAPPY ThanksgivingAmalgamated Transit Union International President Larry Hanley issued the following statement to mark Thanksgiving in Canada from the Tommy Douglas Conference Center in Silver Spring, MD.

“Today, families will gather in homes all over Canada to celebrate Thanksgiving. And Canadians have much to be thankful for.

“Our brothers and sisters in Canada have played at key role in building one of the most progressive nations in the world, where the rights of workers are respected, there is a national pension system, every citizen is entitled to the health care they need to take care of their families and make a contribution to society.

“None of this happened by accident. Trade unionists, including many ATU brothers and sisters, made sacrifices so that everyday Canadian workers would have the means to provide and care for their families.

“While we can never repay them, we can pay what they gave us forward by actively defending and working to extend the rights of all workers for future generations.

“That might be the best way of expressing our gratitude for all of the many good things in our lives this Thanksgiving.”
