ATU endorses Patrick Gaspard for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor

Silver Spring, MD – Recognizing the need to have people serving our government, especially at the highest levels, who not only understand the needs of working people, but the role that unions play, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is proud to endorse Patrick Gaspard for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The ATU is the largest labor organization representing transportation workers in the United States and Canada.

“Patrick Gaspard, who has dedicated his life to improving the lives of working families, is a perfect fit to lead the DOL.  While he has held many impressive titles over the years – including U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, White House Political Director, and Executive Director of the Democratic National Committee – he has never forgotten that he is the child of Haitian immigrants and a product of the Labor Movement,” said ATU International President John Costa.

Gaspard is beyond qualified and prepared to lead the DOL. As Executive Vice President for Politics and Legislation at Service Employees International Union (SEIU) District 1199 – the largest healthcare union in the United States – Gaspard fought for social justice for all workers for nearly a decade. He often stood side by side with rank and file transit workers represented by the ATU in pursuit of progressive policies.

“When state officials cut off union dues in an attempt to cripple transit labor in New York City, Patrick helped us fight back and save thousands of working families from losing the benefits of union representation,” Costa continued.

Gaspard has led solidarity fights across the country and around the world. He has negotiated worker-friendly trade deals, working to build vibrant and inclusive societies, grounded in respect for human rights, always focusing on the working class and all those who face discrimination purely for who they are, cutting across all races.

“After four years of doing everything in its power to destroy unions, abolish worker protections, cripple workers’ ability to organize, and increase profits for corporations, DOL needs a transformational leader who gets up every morning thinking about ways to support American workers and rebuild our middle class. The ATU is proud to support Patrick Gaspard for this critical role,” Costa concluded.
