ATU Commends Jury’s Decision to Convict Derek Chauvin

Silver Spring, MD - Amalgamated Transit Union International President John Costa issued the following statement in reaction to the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial for the death of George Floyd.

"The ATU commends the jury's decision to convict Derek Chauvin for the tragic murder of George Floyd last May. Floyd's last words were, ‘Please, I can't breathe’. Despite his pleas, Officer Chauvin kneeled on his lifeless body for an additional two minutes after uttering those heartbreaking and all too familiar last words.  Our hearts and prayers are with the Floyd family at this time.

"George Floyd's life mattered, and even though this decision is a step toward justice, more must be done. With the recent killing of Daunte Wright by a Brooklyn Center, MN, police officer, along with the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others, we still have a long way to go to end the systemic cycle of injustice, racism, and hatred that plagues our country.

“Talking about race and policing can be controversial, but we must address this problem. This verdict underscores the need to implement better reforms against police brutality and systemic racism and ensures justice for victims. Our law enforcement should protect our safety and treat everyone with dignity and respect.

"The ATU remains committed to working towards these reforms and fighting for racial and economic justice for all."
