ATU Celebrates Biden/Harris Victory

Union among the first to endorse Joe Biden

Silver Spring, MD – The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) celebrates the momentous election victory of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the 46th President and Vice President of the United States of America, garnering more votes than any other presidential candidate in America’s history.

“Working families across this great country have made their voices heard with the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. This historic victory also broke barriers by electing the first woman and first Black-Asian American to the nation’s second highest office. While it took some time to count votes and let democracy work, it is now time for our nation to heal and get to work. We must come together to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, and pursue economic, social and racial justice for all,” says ATU International President John Costa.

Throughout these politically divisive times and a bruising campaign, Biden and Harris have consistently stood for essential workers, public transit and working families every step of the way.

“As early endorsers of Biden, we are proud of the role the ATU and our members across the country played in mobilizing the vote to elect Biden and Harris,” Costa continued. “From our Biden town hall to phone banking, text messaging, mailings, drive by rallies, and involvement in campaigns, ATU played a vital role in this well-earned victory.”

This year’s election saw historic numbers of Americans voting when compared to the 2016 election. As we continue to experience the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and a widespread pandemic, voters went to the ballot box and voiced their need for change and strong, competent leadership during these difficult times.

From Atlanta to Phoenix, Detroit to Pittsburgh, Las Vegas to Milwaukee and all across the country, our brothers and sisters also played a key role in electing Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and many pro-transit and pro-worker candidates. Our members also mobilized in San Antonio, Seattle, and Austin to help pass critical ballot initiatives to improve and expand public transit for riders, workers and their communities.

“On behalf of the more than 200,000 members of the Amalgamated Transit Union we congratulate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their historic victory and all of our ATU endorsed candidates,” Costa continued. “Through this election we have proven once again, the power of working people standing together. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity and realize our collective dream where every worker is treated with dignity and respect. We look forward to working together over the next four years to move our nation forward for all Americans."
