ATU Applauds Biden Appointment of Nuria Fernandez as Acting Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration

Silver Spring, MD – The Amalgamated Transit Union International President John Costa released the following statement regarding the appointment of Nuria Fernandez as Acting Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration.

"As the largest labor organization representing transit workers in the United States and Canada, the Amalgamated Transit Union applauds the appointment of Nuria Fernandez as Acting Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

"A friend of the ATU, Nuria, who served as the General Manager and CEO of Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, brings more than 35 years of experience in the transportation industry, including serving as the Acting FTA Administrator under President Bill Clinton.

"Nuria understands firsthand the challenges facing transit workers and the transportation industry, which have been ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic. She knows what it will take to safely revive and expand public transit and create good and safe union jobs.

“Prior to leading the VTA, Fernandez served in leadership positions at some of the busiest transit agencies in America, including the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Chicago Transit Authority, and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

"On a personal note, the ATU and I have known Nuria for many years. Serving with us on the Transportation Learning Center Board, Nuria has also worked closely with our San Jose Local in developing leading innovative labor-management apprenticeship programs to provide frontline transit workers the opportunity to advance their careers.

"Nuria is beyond qualified and prepared to lead the Federal Transit Administration. Her dedication to public service as a leader in the public transportation industry is irrefutable. We call on the Senate to confirm Nuria as soon as possible and look forward to continuing to work alongside her to improve public transportation for all of America's communities."
