Amalgamated Transit Union expresses solidarity with Chilean workers, condemns brutal repression

ATU International President John A. Costa released the following statement in support of Chilean workers on strike.

“On behalf of the more than 200,000 members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) across North America, I want to express our strong solidarity and support with Chile’s unions and working people and strongly condemn the brutal repression of the government of Chilean President Piñera.

“This general strike is about democracy, economic justice, and bravely defending the human rights of all the Chilean people.  The subway workers’ union and other participants in the strike are calling for social justice, including subsidized train fares, nationalizing public transit to stop privatization, a forty-hour week, and the restoration of union and collective bargaining rights.

“We are deeply concerned about the Chilean government’s excessive use of force to arrest thousands that has resulted in injuring more than 375 people. This type of brutality should not be tolerated.

“We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Chile in their struggle and call on the Chilean government to immediately restore democratic freedoms and submit to the just demands of the country’s working people.”
