Above and Beyond

Steve Holmes

Local 741’s Steve Holmes -
A jack of all trades

As a dedicated 40-year member of Local 741-London, ON, Steve Holmes sets an example for all of his fellow members – not only by talking the talk, but walking the walk.

A self-starter, Brother Holmes has devoted his time and boundless energy both on and off the job toward improving Local 741 while helping to build important partnerships between his local union, transit advocates and community groups.

Steve’s willingness, determination and leadership have been apparent since he joined the local in 1974. He has served in numerous positions as a trainer, political activist, executive board member, and community activist.

EBM for 21 years

Serving on the local’s executive board for 21 years (three of those years as acting president) being involved has always been part of Steve’s nature, but he has worked hard at it. “I wanted to know what was going on within the local and be an active participant in solving matters that were important to members.”

After taking many training courses with the Ontario Disability Response Team (ODRT), Steve became an instructor for the ORDT and the Workers Health & Safety Centre. Recognizing his expertise, the Canadian Labour Congress asked him to help out with their Fairness Works campaign.

“I find all the work I get into rewarding. I have been given opportunities because of my union, and I am happy to make full use of them,” says Steve.

Steve’s impressive involvement doesn’t stop there. He serves as first vice president of the London District Labour Council, and president of the London North Centre New Democratic Party Riding Association. He even ran as provincial NDP candidate in two elections and a federal candidate in one.

Knowledge worthy of picking

Local 741 President  Brian Tansy, describes Steve as a “fountain of information” and admits to constantly picking Steve’s brain for information on the grievances, arbitrations, settlements, and union activities that have taken place over the past 40 years.  “He is always looking out for the best of the union and eager to help out whenever he can.”

He continues to be a beacon of knowledge and advocacy for transit workers, which is why ATU salutes Steve Holmes for four decades of going above and beyond.
