Information Technology Professional

 

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is the largest labor union representing transit and allied workers in the United States and Canada. It was founded in 1892 and is comprised of over 190,000 members.

Job Description

The ATU is seeking an information technology professional for its International Headquarters located in Washington DC who can demonstrate:

  • An ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing).
  • An ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a cost effective way.
  • An ability to develop, enhance and maintain automated data, application programs, application systems and operating systems software within midrange, network and client server environments.
  • An ability to manage other professionals.
  • An ability to track and document the network infrastructure.
Education

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 24 credits in computer science, data processing, computer information systems, data communications, networking, systems analysis, programming or mathematics

Experience

At least five years of professional experience in the managing of midrange, network or client server environments. References will be contacted.

Job Duties

The job duties listed are typical examples of the work that will need to be performed. The job duties are divided into two environments below (The IBM Midrange Environment (I-Series, AS/400) and the Client Server Environment). Not all duties are included.

IBM Midrange Environment (IBM I-Series, AS/400)

There exist over 1,000 compiled custom objects that satisfy current requirements in the areas of Membership, Cash Receipts, Payroll, Direct Deposits of Payroll, Committee on Political Education, Research, 13-C, Contributions along with the supplying of data to the AFL-CIO and other allied organizations.

The applicant must be able to demonstrate a proficiency in the following areas:

  • Hardware configuration and functionality (I-Series / AS/400)
  • Inventory and Licensing
  • Console Operations for monitoring the midrange environment
  • Operating System (OS/400)
  • Design, Test and Implement Databases (DB2)
  • Query (Query 36)
  • Conversion from a flat file structure to a Database structure
  • Data Backup and Recovery
  • System Security
  • IBM Client Access Software
  • Printer Configuration, Setup and Troubleshooting
  • S/36 Environment
  • User Support
  • Evaluate, Procure and Implement 3rd Party Software when necessary
  • Purchasing and Maintenance
  • Prepare Detailed Written Instructions and Documentation
  • Structured Programming Methodology
  • Procedural Languages (CL and OCL)
  • Develop, Enhance and Maintain data processing systems
  • Programming Languages (RPG - emphasis on RPG II/III)
    • Full interactive capabilities with error checking
    • Batch processing proficiency
    • Security to the menu level
    • Develop, enhance, maintain and train users on applications
Client Server Environment

There are multiple servers on site. They are used to manage File and Print Services, Software, SQL Server, Backup and Recovery, Antivirus and Active Directory.

The applicant must be able to demonstrate a proficiency in the following areas:

  • Hardware configuration and functionality
  • Inventory and Licensing
  • Hubs, Switches, Routers, Servers, IP Addressing
  • Operating Systems (Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, Windows 7)
  • Design, Test and Implement Database Applications (SQL Server)
  • Incorporate Web Front-End to Database Applications
  • Incorporate Web Front-End software as necessary (Java, or equivalent)
  • System Security
  • Symantec Antivirus
  • Symantec Backup Exec
  • IBM Client Access Software
  • Printer Configuration, Setup and Troubleshooting
  • User Support
  • Evaluate, Procure and Implement 3rd Party Software when necessary
  • Purchasing and Maintenance
  • Preparing Detailed Written Instructions and Documentation
  • Develop, Enhance and Maintain data processing systems
  • Structured Programming Methodology
  • Programming Languages (SQL or equivalent)
    • Full interactive capabilities with error checking
    • Batch processing proficiency
    • Security to the menu level
    • Develop, enhance, maintain and train users on applications
