AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Observance
Memphis, TN 01/17/2008 - 01/21/2008
An Open Letter to ATU Local Unions from International President Warren S. George
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said in his last speech on April 3, 1968, while supporting striking Memphis Sanitation Workers, “Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination …to make America what it ought to be.” The next day, he was assassinated.
In honor of Dr. King’s dedication and sacrifice to the labor movement, the AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance will be held January 17-21, 2008, in Memphis, TN. This observance will mark the 40th anniversary of the Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike and honor Dr. King’s final campaign for worker justice.
Please join ATU executive officers and the rest of the labor movement in Memphis to remember the legacies of Dr. King and the 1968 sanitation workers. This weekend of observance will include a program of education and community service, while advancing the agenda for civil and workers’ rights. We would also be honored to have you march in a contingent of ATU members in the MLK parade of Monday, January 21, 2008.
The AFL-CIO registration form is linked here. Each local union and/or member must bear their own expenses for this event. Besides travel expenses, the additional costs to the local unions are detailed below. Keep in mind, the conference registration fee covers two dinners including the awards banquet, the labor breakfast and conference materials. Also, there is a special rate of $104 at the Memphis Hilton Hotel. If you intend on attending, you should register as soon as possible.
If you would like additional information, please contact Michael Nguyen at m_nguyen@atu.org or by phone at (202) 537-1645 ext 252.
We look forward to seeing you in Memphis.
In Solidarity,
