Proud to be ATU
The ATU is the largest transit union in North America. ATU transit and allied trade members enjoy the highest wages and benefits in the industry. We are leaders in the fight to ensure safety in mass transit. And we work hard to improve service to our riders. We're proud to be ATU.
Labor elected a President who Stands with Working Men and Women
On November 4, 2008, with the help of so many ATU members and sisters and brothers from other unions, the United States eleeted Barack Obama as the next President of the United States.
Our members staffed phone banks, canvassed door-to-door and spent untold hours working to elect labor-friendly candidates. And we succeeded. We should all take immense pride in our achievements.
We will work to insure that our voices are heard in the new administration. For the first time in eight long
years we will have a voice in political appointments and policies. Maybe the new president will not be in a
position to give us all we want in his first few years, but we know we will now be heard and our opinions
will be considered.
Congratulations also to our members in North Carolina who helped elect Kay Hagan as their new Senator; to our members in Virginia who helped to elect Mark Warner to the U.S. Senate; to our members in New Hampshire who elected Jeanne Shaheen to the Senate; to our members in Oregon who elected Jeff Merkley to the Senate; and to our members in Colorado, who worked to elect Mark Udall to the Senate. Although we have no members there, another Democrat, Tom Udall was elected to the Senate in New Mexico and as I write this the races in Minnesota, Alaska and Georgia are still undecided. We stand ready to work with President-elect Obama and with his Vice President, Joe Biden, who has been a great friend to labor over the years.
I have never more proud of ATU members, and of all our brothers and sisters in the labor movement. We made it happen. Thank you for all you did!
