What is more important than dignity and respect?

Our challenge at the ATU is to bring the benefits of trade unionism to the thousands of unorganized workers in the transit, school bus and paratransit industries throughout the U.S. and Canada.  Simply put: to help them fight for dignity and respect.

ATU International President Warren S. George has made organizing a priority of the ATU and his organizing plan is in full swing.  The program is targeted to five U.S. regions (Southeast, Western States, Midwest, East Coast/Mid Atlantic) and Canada.  Our plan has six steps that are essential to success:

  • Targeting and Research
  • Education and Mobilization of ATU rank and file members (member-activists) through each of the regional programs
  • A staffed organizing department including member organizers
  • Communications that support the ongoing organizing campaigns
  • An integrated program that includes the political, legislative and legal departments at the ATU
  • An organizing model that sets minimum standards for initiation campaigns and filing petitions

This plan was developed when an active group of local union officers representing all regions of the U.S. and Canada met in Washington, DC with the ATU Organizing Director and the ATU Executive Officers to launch the new effort.

Why Organize?

  • Organizing builds a stronger union
  • Successful organizing means that all workers whether they drive or maintain school buses, paratransit vehicles, transit or over-the-road vehicles are receiving competitive wages and benefits
  • Organizing means all workers in our industries have the opportunity to “drive with dignity.”
  • Organizing means sharing our pride and broadening the ATU family

As you read this website, you will see that an ever-growing number of member-organizers are joining the ATU's organizing ranks throughout the U.S. and Canada
