Warren S. George — International President

Warren S. George assumed the office of ATU International President on July 1, 2003. He was unanimously elected to a full three year term by the 54th ATU International Convention in 2004, and re-elected unanimously at the 55th Convention in 2007. He is the seventh International President in the Union’s 117 year history.

George is a native of Pittsburgh, PA. After a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy, he was employed as a bus driver for Critchlow Bus Lines in September 1956. In January 1963, he assisted ATU Local 85 in organizing Chritchlow and he became a member of the Union after that successful organizing drive.

On June 20, 1963, George was elected Executive Board Member Operators, of Local 85, and in 1968 he was elected as Executive Board Member Maintenance. Now working for the Port Authority of Alleghany County, he subsequently held the positions of President and Financial Secretary Treasurer of Local 85 from June 1970 through June 1975. He also served as a Delegate to the Alleghany County Central Labor Council during those years.

In September 1975, George was elected an ATU International Vice President and member of the General Executive Board at that year’s International Convention. On May 1, 1990, George was appointed Special Assistant to the International President.

On August 1, 1993, George was appointed International Executive Vice President. In September 1995, he was elected to his first full term in that position at the ATU International Convention.

On September 30, 2002, the General Executive Board unanimously approved Warren S. George to succeed the retiring International President on July 1, 2003. He is a member of the Executive Council of the AFL-CIO.

Warren George and his wife, Janice, reside in Adamstown, MD. They have three adult children.
