Neil Safrin
Exec. Bd. Mbr., ATU Local 587, 587
After being actively involved in local Democratic politics and the AFL-CIO's Labor 2006 political program, Neil Safrin, a transit operator for King Couty Metro, is confident that the labor political program is the most effective political education program out there. "Union members really do want to hear from their union about the candidates," said Safrin. "They may not always decide to follow union recommendations, but they will give them serious consideration."
More Than His Part
As the Labor 2006 coordinator for his local, Safrin did more than his part to make sure that ATU members in Washington were educated about union-endorsed candidates. His duties included recruiting volunteers, writing articles for the local's newsletter, preparing mailings to ATU members, helping to set up the Labor 2006 office in Seattle, stuffing walk packets, organizing and participating in walks and phone banks, and coordinating activities with other ATU locals in the state.
The hardest part of his job: recruiting volunteers. "It's hard," said Safrin, "our members are busy. They work long hours and have family commitments. Their lives are stressful. But when it comes right down to it, we need volunteers to get the job done. Sometimes you just have to give some things up." Safrin said he's given up gardening, among other hobbies.
"Our jobs and working conditions are now dependent on local, state and federal funding. It is essential for our union to be active to improve our working conditions," asserted Safrin.
