Gerri Bell
Fin. Sec., ATU Local 1395, 1395
Prior to being released from her job to work full time on the Labor 2006 political program for the last two weeks before the election, Gerri Bell, a bus operator in Pensacola, volunteered at least some of her time almost everyday during the previous two months. "She is truly dedicated," said Local President Mike Lowery about Bell.
Unions Make the Difference
"It's very important for union members to be involved in politics. Unions make the difference," declared Bell. "How would unions survive if we didn't get involved to elect people who represent our interests?"
Bell has volunteered for everything, including phone banks, labor walks, local union mailings, worksite leafletting, voter registration and more. "I've enjoyed all elements of the Labor 2006 program," related Bell regarding her experience. "Every part is extremely important."
The biggest problem, according to Bell, is "there aren't enough people volunteering. Everyone who works for a living should be involved. We can't afford to have elected officials in office who are not for working people."
