ATU-TWU National Campaign to 'Save Our Ride'
The Amalgamated Transit Union and the Transport Workers Union have undertaken an unprecedented joint campaign to address the funding crisis in mass transit in the United States. The goal of this "Save Our Ride" campaign is to pass legislation which will allow all mass transit agencies to use at least a portion of their federal funding for operating expenses (wages, administration, etc.) rather than capital expenses (buses, transit stations, etc.) Toward that end the two unions are fighting to get Congress to pass two bills -- H.R. 2746 introduced by Rep. Russ Carnahan, D-MO, in the House, and S. 3189 introduced by Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-OH, in the Senate -- which would do just that.
Along with this legislative work the two unions are holding a series of rallies throughout the United States to build enthusiam for the bills.
