Health & Safety
As transit workers, school bus employees, and over-the-road bus workers - whether driving a bus, operating a train, maintaining vehicles or facilities, or working in customer service - ATU members face a number of serious health and safety risks.
ATU works to address these issues through legislative and regulatory avenues, workplace advocacy and member and employer education.
Take a Break
It’s an issue which hasn’t been publicly addressed until recently. But it has a direct bearing on an operator’s health.

The very nature of transportation jobs puts ATU members at increased risk for a number of serious health problems.
Common risk factors for transit, school bus and intercity bus operators include the sedentary nature of the job, tight schedules, inadequate restroom/break facilities, traffic-related stress, tense customer relations, and ergonomic issues such as vehicle seat design and impact issues. Likewise, maintenance employees face risks related to the physical requirements of the job, chemical exposure, repetitive motions and other ergonomic factors.
In an effort to educate ATU members about these issues, the ATU has launched a Focus on Wellness campaign. In addition to monthly email alerts about health issues, Focus on Wellness columns regularly appear in the In Transit:
