Focus on Wellness: Back Injuries
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than one million U.S. workers suffer back injuries each year.
This means that back injuries account for one of every five workplace injuries or illnesses.
Due to the requirements of their jobs, ATU members who work in transit, intercity bus, school bus or paratransit are at high risk for back injuries. Prolonged hours of sitting or seat vibration can lead to back problems for vehicle operators. Repeated bending, or stooping and heavy lifting, expose maintenance employees to back strain. Paratransit employees who must assist elderly or disabled passengers, including performing tasks such as pushing passengers in wheelchairs up steep ramps or driveways, are also vulnerable to serious back injury.
There are some basic things you can do to reduce your risk of back injury.
Know Your Limits - And Ask for Help
Whether at home or at work, it is important to make good decisions about what you can and cannot lift. Avoid carrying objects too heavy or awkward for you to handle alone; and be sure to get help if you still need to handle the load.
Use appropriate equipment to move objects (or persons).
Be careful moving heavy things when you are tired. Fatigue can cause you to move more awkwardly. Heavy loads pose the greatest risk, so know your limitations.
Don't attempt to lift something you feel is beyond your ability. Wherever possible, ask a co-worker to help! |
